The Iran-Iraq War - New International Perspectives (Paperback): Nigel Ashton, Bryan Gibson The Iran-Iraq War - New International Perspectives (Paperback)
Nigel Ashton, Bryan Gibson
R1,415 Discovery Miles 14 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume offers a wide-ranging examination of the Iran-Iraq War (1980-88), featuring fresh regional and international perspectives derived from recently available new archival material. Three decades ago Iran and Iraq became embroiled in a devastating eight-year war which served to re-define the international relations of the Gulf region. The Iran-Iraq War stands as an anomaly in the Cold War era; it was the only significant conflict in which the interests of the United States and Soviet Union unwittingly aligned, with both superpowers ultimately supporting the Iraqi regime. The Iran-Iraq War re-assesses not only the superpower role in the conflict but also the war's regional and wider international dimensions by bringing to the fore fresh evidence and new perspectives from a variety of sources. It focuses on a number of themes including the economic dimensions of the war and the roles played by a variety of powers, including the Gulf States, Turkey, France, the Soviet Union and the United States. The contributions to the volume serve to underline that the Iran-Iraq war was a defining conflict, shaping the perspectives of the key protagonists for a generation to come. This book will be of much interest to students of international and Cold War history, Middle Eastern politics, foreign policy, and International Relations in general.

An Analysis of Albert Hourani's A History of the Arab Peoples (Hardcover): Brown, Bryan Gibson An Analysis of Albert Hourani's A History of the Arab Peoples (Hardcover)
Brown, Bryan Gibson
R675 Discovery Miles 6 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Few works of history make as well-structured a case for the importance of studying continuity, rather than change, than Albert Hourani's A History of the Arab Peoples. Hourani's work had three major aims: to refute the idea that Arab society stagnated between 1000 and 1800; to study the period through the lens of diverse Arab, rather than Muslim, history; and to stress intellectual and cultural continuity. All of these intentions were the product of the author's evaluation of a great mass of secondary sources, many of them devoted to arguing for ideas that contradicted his, and it demanded considerable skill to synthesize from them a coherent and well-evidenced counter-argument. Hourani was able to do this largely because his grasp of the relevance and adequacy of his predecessors' arguments was second to none; his achievement lies in his ability to reject the reasoning of other historians while still making good use of their evidence. In this task, he was aided by an interpretative skill almost equal to his powers of evaluation; A History of the Arab Peoples is also a monument to the importance of properly understanding the meaning of available evidence.

World Order - Reflections on the Character of Nations and the Course of History (Hardcover): Bryan Gibson World Order - Reflections on the Character of Nations and the Course of History (Hardcover)
Bryan Gibson
R675 Discovery Miles 6 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Henry Kissinger's 2014 book World Order: Reflections on the Character of Nations and the Course of History not only offers a summary of thinking developed throughout a long and highly influential career-it is also an intervention in international relations theory by one of the most famous statesmen of the twentieth century. Kissinger initially trained as a university professor before becoming Secretary of State to President Richard Nixon in 1973 - a position in which he both won the Nobel Peace Prize and was accused of war crimes by protesters against American military actions in Vietnam. While a controversial figure, Kissinger is widely agreed to have a unique level of practical and theoretical expertise in politics and international relations - and World Order is the culmination of a lifetime's experience of work in those fields. The product of a master of the critical thinking skill of interpretation, World Order takes on the challenge of defining the worldviews at play in global politics today. Clarifying precisely what is meant by the different notions of 'order' imagined by nations across the world, as Kissinger does, highlights the challenges of world politics, and sharpens the focus on efforts to make surmounting these divisions possible. While Kissinger's own reputation will likely remain equivocal, there is no doubting the interpretative skills he displays in this engaging and illuminating text.

Iran - A People Interrupted (Hardcover): Bryan Gibson Iran - A People Interrupted (Hardcover)
Bryan Gibson
R677 Discovery Miles 6 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Hamid Dabashi's 2007 Iran: A People Interrupted is simultaneously subtle, passionate, polarizing and polemical. A concise account of Iranian history from the early 19th-century onward, Dabashi's book uses his incisive analytical skills as a basis for creating a persuasive argument against the views of Iran that predominate in the West. In Dabashi's view, Western approaches to Iran have been colored time and time again by the assumption that it is somehow trapped between regressive 'tradition,' and progressive 'modernity.' The reality, he argues, is quite the opposite: Iran has its own distinctive ideology of modernity, which is nevertheless opposed to many Western ideals. In order to prove his point, Dabashi draws on a lifetime's experience of literary criticism to analyse the relationship between Iran's intellectual and political elites over two centuries. His analysis provides the key evidence for his reasoning by teasing out the implicit assumptions that underly the texts and people he examines. Looking beneath the surface of the evidence, Dabashi finds - time and time again - the traces of a uniquely Iranian notion of modernity that is quite at odds with its Western counterpart.

The Global Cold War - Third World Interventions And The Making Of Our Times (Hardcover): Patrick Glenn, Bryan Gibson The Global Cold War - Third World Interventions And The Making Of Our Times (Hardcover)
Patrick Glenn, Bryan Gibson
R675 Discovery Miles 6 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For those who lived through the Cold War period, and for many of the historians who study it, it seemed self-evident that the critical incidents that determined its course took place in the northern hemisphere, specifically in the face-off between NATO and the Warsaw Pact in Europe. In this view, the Berlin Wall mattered more than the Ho Chi Minh Trail, and the Soviet intervention in Hungary was vastly more significant than Soviet intervention in Korea. It was only the fine balance of power in the northern theatre that redirected the attentions of the USA and the USSR elsewhere, and resulted in outbreaks of proxy warfare elsewhere in the globe - in Korea, in Vietnam and in Africa. Odd Arne Westad's triumph is to look at the history of these times through the other end of the telescope - to reconceptualize the Cold War as something that fundamentally happened in the Third World, not the First. The thesis he presents in The Global Cold War is highly creative. It upends much conventional wisdom and points out that the determining factor in the struggle was not geopolitics, but ideology - an ideology, moreover, that was heavily flavoured by elements of colonialist thinking that ought to have been alien to the mindsets of two avowedly anti-colonial superpowers. Westad's work is a fine example of the creative thinking skill of coming up with new connections and fresh solutions; it also never shies away from generating new hypotheses or redefining issues in order to see them in new ways.

Theology of Discontent - The Ideological Foundation of the Islamic Revolution in Iran (Paperback): Magdalena C. Delgado, Bryan... Theology of Discontent - The Ideological Foundation of the Islamic Revolution in Iran (Paperback)
Magdalena C. Delgado, Bryan Gibson
R222 Discovery Miles 2 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Hamid Dabashi’s 1997 work Theology of Discontent reveals a creative thinker capable not only of understanding how an argument is built, but also of redefining old issues in new ways. The Iranian Revolution of 1978–9 was front-page news in the West, and in some ways remains so today. Though it was an uprising against authoritarian royal rule, with a coalition of modernisers and Islamists, the revolution saw the birth of a new Islamic Republic that seemed to reject pro-Western democracy. Dabashi wanted to analyze the real reasons for this change, while examining how Islamic ideologies contributed to the revolution and the republic that followed.

Theology of Discontent examines different Islamic thinkers, analyzing how views with seemingly little in common contributed to the modern Iranian belief system. Beyond its insightful analytical dissection of these eight thinkers, Theology of Discontent also shows Dabashi’s creative thinking skills. Reframing the debates about Iran’s relationship with the West, he traced the ways in which Iranian identity formed in reactive opposition to Western ideas. In many ways, Dabashi suggested, Iran was trapped in a cycle of deliberately asserting its difference from the West, a process that was fundamental to the development of its own unique brand of revolutionary Islamism.

The Legend of St Yves - Law, Justice and Mediation (Paperback, Enhanced edition): Bryan Gibson The Legend of St Yves - Law, Justice and Mediation (Paperback, Enhanced edition)
Bryan Gibson
R405 Discovery Miles 4 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Legend of Saint Yves is not widely known in Britain, even though he is the patron saint of lawyers (among other things). In this informative account, Bryan Gibson places St Yves - born Erwan Helouri - on a par with Robin Hood, Jessie James and Ned Kelly in terms of their appeal to various national psyches - and up there alongside Joan of Arc and Bernadette of Lourdes as regards his native France. But whilst conventional outlaws used bows, arrows, six-guns and bullets to 'rob the rich to help the poor', St Yves challenged the poverty and social inequality which he saw as the root of many a prosecution or claim via argument, debate, reason and consensus. At a time when bribery and corruption was rife, St Yves waged an historic struggle to enhance the fairness of court and other proceedings and their outcomes. Hailing St Yves as an icon of justice, counselling, mediation and reform, Bryan Gibson explains why Erwan Helouri deserves to be better known, including for the values of decency, integrity and ethics that his approach to resolving conflict conveys. The result is not just a fascinating portrayal of the man but a work that will serve as an encouragement to anyone who believes that there are better ways of doing justice. Building on connections across time, place and elements of the supernatural, Law, Justice and Mediation: The Legend of St Yves also stands in its own right as an enlightening and compelling tale. A filip for all proponents of Restorative Justice - showing that such ideas have existed over time and place. As Guardian columnist and legal commentator Marcel Berlin writes in the Foreword: 'St Yves deserves to be far better known than he is, especially in the English-speaking world, and in Bryan Gibson he has found a worthy champion'. Bryan Gibson is a barrister and former co-editor of Justice of the Peace. He has written many books on aspects of criminal justic

Malefectus and Lesser Tales (Paperback): Bryan Gibson Malefectus and Lesser Tales (Paperback)
Bryan Gibson
R314 Discovery Miles 3 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A teacher, a pupil, in a class taught by a madman. Within his academy of shadows teaching aids include: pornography, chains, and Mozart; discipline is vigorous; mediocrity, unacceptable; and uniforms are the curves and mounds of supple flesh. Here, Life or Death are the only grades offered; Love me or die the only subject taught. Both decadence and decency are the lessons of the day--are you ready? Good. Let the learning begin. Following his controversial first novel, Karma Incarnate: The Best of Foolkiller, Bryan Gibson returns with his most controversial work to date, Malefectus and Lesser Tales. Inspired by the gothic writings of Charles Maturin, Ann Radcliffe, and the Marquis De Sade, this collection features the bizarre and grotesque, all lavished in brilliant--at times shocking--prose that will surely delight serious readers. Prepare to be absorbed, disturbed, and entertained by this terrifying, unforgiving work.

Karma Incarnate - The Best of Foolkiller (Paperback): Bryan Gibson Karma Incarnate - The Best of Foolkiller (Paperback)
Bryan Gibson
R274 Discovery Miles 2 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A few years ago the comedian Bill Cosby addressed an issue which has long been discussed within the African American community: the responsibility of certain blacks to not behave like stereotypes. Cosby's outspokenness made public a topic that had mostly been a private one, and the discourse that followed was observed in newspapers and magazines, on radio and television: these featured the thoughts of many who argued for or against Cosby's statement, and their vehemence-their need to confirm or counter his view-leads us to Bryan Gibson's first novel, "Karma Incarnate: The Best of Foolkiller."

"Karma Incarnate" is about a man, Joseph Tally, who is slowly losing himself to Alzheimer's, but before he vanishes completely, he reveals to his son a secret life of shadows and death: ..".for thirty years I've been a soldier in a secret war, a rogue agent moving stealthily beyond the reach of my government. I changed my name, of course; the name I had no longer suited me: I changed my name, date of birth, and social security number-indeed, Jumoki, I became a new man...but I remained the killer of fools." Obsessed with James Bond and Friedrich Nietzsche, Tally fuses these obsessions with one more: concern, both for his people and his community, recalling haunting, often violent "missions" whose goal is the end of harmful stereotypes, and the elimination those of who perpetuate them: "The kill, no matter its necessity, never brings me joy, nor anything close to it; but I do what I must for the greater good-it is why I am." Throughout this work, readers will be struggling to determine if what he tells his son is true, or a delusion, an effect of the disease; but whether believed or doubted, the father's words are a revelation.
